10 alternative ways for overcoming back pain once and for all
As someone who has suffered from back pain from a very young age, I have tried many things. When I was 23 years old, I got my first serious painful episode, where I could barely move for a week. Whether it was due to trauma from the trainings in rhythmic gymnastics that I attended as a child, or the prolonged sitting during school years and then also at work, is debatable. If you’d like to explore more options than just painkillers or topical anti-inflammatory gels that you see often advertised on the TV, here is what helped me…
Consult with a neurologist
It’s good to know exactly what’s wrong and how not to provoke the pain. This means visiting a neurologist and undergoing appropriate tests, such as MRI.
What can you try next?
- Essential oils
Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts from plants obtained by steam distillation or by mechanical pressing. Each essential oil is not only a nice fragrance, but also contains medicinal substances that contribute to its therapeutic properties. For example, the essential oil of frankincense, copaiba and immortelle contain chemical compounds that reduce pain. The combination of copaiba, frankincense in carrier oil with arnica has provided me with instant relief for any joint pain. If you decide to try it, always make a patch test. Essential oils should also always be diluted in a carrier oil, even olive oil would work. I usually use the following recipe: 3% dilution applied 3 times a day on the lower back area:
5 drops of frankincense essential oil
5 drops of copaiba essential oil
- Thermal baths visit
Research your area to discover information about mineral springs and therapeutic thermal baths. Even just a weekend of soaking can bring relief to your lower back. My home country Bulgaria for example is very rich in many mineral springs appreciated since Roman times. If you have the opportunity to travel to Bulgaria, go to Kyustendil, Velingrad, Pavel Banya or Pomorie and take advantage of the waters and pools there that are great for any joints pain.
- Restorative yoga
Practices with a teacher in therapeutic or restorative yoga have a long-lasting effect. If you are experiencing acute pain, however, I recommend starting with very light yoga styles: for beginners, Hatha and Yin Yoga. After I started practicing yoga my back issues disappeared. I haven’t had any lower back pain for at least seven years. I have found that to get the best long-lasting result, it takes at least two yoga practices per week. The detailed studies of functional movement of the body during my training as a yoga teacher contributed to achieving pain-free life. If you’re interested to have a class with me, please check the details here.
The condition of the feet and arches affects the whole body. Try custom insoles, because very often the pain in the lower back, knees and hip joints, and even in the neck are caused by problems with the arch of the feet and distortion when walking. There are conflicting opinions whether insoles are beneficial. Some specialists believe that they are like a band aid and do not lead to any improvement. My personal experience is quite the opposite. I’m very satisfied with the custom insoles I got from Foot Balance www.footbalance.com and the way they improved my overall posture.
- Posture analysis with personalized exercises
I had a personal consultation on my posture and found that I was leaning forward, which could lead to problems with the knees, in addition to the lower back issues. During that consultation I was given a prescription for personalized exercises and knowing what my posture issue was I constantly self-corrected myself during the day. Find a specialist in Nutritious movement https://www.nutritiousmovement.com/, in Gokhale https://gokhalemethod.com/ or Egoscue Method https://www.egoscue.com/what-is-egoscue/technology/ and arrange for a personal consultation to get individual correction exercises.
Yumeiho is a therapeutic method based on manual actions performed on the entire human body for maintaining or improving health. It includes about 100 maneuvers that lead to the elimination of pain and discomfort. Yumeiho specialists restore the balance in the body, set by nature. This is achieved by a complex system of techniques with shifting and fixing the body, which restore the initial symmetry in the posture and lead to relief from pain. - Massage with a recommended masseur
Even neurologists recommend regular visits to an experienced masseur. If you are in pain, several visits may be required before you experience any relief. Try deep tissue, cupping and gua sha massages.
- Magnetic belt
Magnetotherapy is used in alternative medicine to achieve impact on the body through very strong magnets. I personally benefited from a magnetic belt with neodymium magnets, which are very strong. I’ve given the same belt to friends and they haven’t had any relief from back pain. Obviously everything is quite individual, but it is worth a try.

- Books with ideas and exercises for body alignment
I recommend these books. I use ideas from them in my yoga classes.
- YouTube channels
Check out the videos of my favourite American physiotherapists and online yoga teachers. I’ve only picked a few clips from their channels but there is a lot more to choose from.
